On the afternoon of 7th December, the international academic exchange activity, jointly organized by the School of Atmospheric Sciences and NJU Nanjing-Helsinki Institute, was successfully held in D103 conference room of the School of Atmospheric Sciences. Three excellent seniors, Tang Rong, Dong Ying and Chen Liangduo, were invited to share their experience of studying abroad with other students.

Tang Rong, a doctoral student of Admitted Class of 2020 from the School of Atmospheric Sciences, firstly introduced the China Scholarship Council (CSC) Program for Graduate Students. She stressed the importance of focusing on the application deadlines and materials, and reminded the students who plan to study abroad to arrange their time in advance. Afterwards, based on her own experience of studying in University of Oxford, Tang put forward her advice of studying abroad for the students: First, the most important thing is to ensure personal safety and emotional health. They should not live in a remote place, should avoid travelling alone at night, and are suggested to keep in touch with family and friends in China and friends living in the same area. In this way, they can adapt themselves to the new environment as soon as possible while ensuring their safety. Second, in terms of scientific research, they should be self-motivated, keep in contact with their supervisors at home and abroad, actively participate in all kinds of academic exchange activities and be brave to think more and innovate. Third, experiencing different culture is also an important part of studying abroad. On the one hand, they should actively join in various cultural and sports activities inside and outside the university. On the other hand, they should learn from both their friends at home and abroad to complement each other.

Dong Ying, a doctoral student of Admitted Class of 2020 from the School of Atmospheric Sciences, briefly introduced what international competence is in terms of knowledge, skills and experiences, and attitudes and values, and then shared her experience of a short-term exchange programme at the International Pacific Research Centre (IPRC) of University of Hawaii at Manoa. Dong gave three pieces of advice of studying abroad: Firstly, attending lectures is the most favorable way to quickly adapt to a foreign language environment and directly acquire professional knowledge. Secondly, communication is an effective way to transfer what they have learned into ideas. Thirdly, practice is the best way to experience the life of studying abroad in an all-round way. Finally, Dong said that she had benefited a lot through the exchange programme: As for scientific research, she had broadened her horizons and improved ways of thinking about her future research. In the face of frustration, she gained more confidence in herself. When it comes to interpersonal relationship, she had learned that showing respect is the prerequisite to get along with others. In addition, she had greatly improved her living skills through adapting herself to a new environment.

Chen Liangduo, a doctoral student of Admitted Class of 2020 from the School of Atmospheric Sciences, shared the application process of the Joint Laboratory Programme and his studying experience at University of Helsinki: Considering learning, Chen introduced various academic exchange activities including group meetings, peer-to-peer exchanges, academic lectures, international academic conferences. He encouraged the students to communicate more with their supervisors and have their own ideas which they should stick to. He also suggested them to share their academic and research work done in China with foreign students and supervisors. With regard to life, Finland is a country whose people attach great importance to the balance between life and work. They work for about eight hours a day, and for the rest of the time they enjoy the beautiful natural scenery in Northern Europe, including the aurora borealis and snow scenes, and join in other interesting activities like picking blueberries. Therefore, in addition to scientific research, they are available to experience the western lifestyle and broaden their vision. Finally, Chen said that NJU provides students with abundant research training opportunities in the hope that every student can balance life and work and conduct their academic research in a healthy way.

After the seniors shared their stories, the students asked a number of questions. Some questions are about the specific process of applying for the the programme; the others are about their life experience during the exchange; and some students asked for advice on how to choose the programme that suits them the most. Student Kong ZiXuan asked, How do you choose the programme since there are so many inter-school and inter-departmental exchange programme including CSC programme? Which one do you think is more important, the programme that has more similarities with your major or the one supported by a leading university like University of Oxford or University of Cambridge?” Student Zuo Jiayi also asked, Is it true that there are some countries that the CSC programme doesn’t cover? And has there been a similar case before? The seniors then answered the questions in detail one by one.

This international academic exchange activity enabled students to learn more about the application process and details of exchange programme on the one hand. And on the other hand, it also allowed them to grasp more knowledge about what will life and scientific research be like overseas, which will be of great help for students who plan to study abroad in the future. The School of Atmospheric Sciences has always been committed to cultivating high-level academic talents who are oriented to contribute to the development of the discipline and have international vision. At the same time, NJU Nanjing-Helsinki Institute is also making unremitting efforts to cultivate talents with excellent academic knowledge, innovative spirit and international vision. It is hoped that through this activity, students can be more likely to participate in exchange programme, develop international academic vision, and become the future leading talents in Atmospheric Sciences!
